With the increased interaction and cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Portuguese, as the sixth most spoken language in the world, has become one of the most popular foreign languages in China. In this context, Portuguese language education, especially at the university level, has received a lot of attention from Chinese researchers. From practices in the Portuguese classroom to the development of appropriate teaching materials, many authors have discussed and studied how to achieve an effective and high level of Portuguese language teaching in the mainland Chinese context. However, even though the teaching of Portuguese at universities in mainland China has improved considerably, it is true that the content remains monotonous, tending towards the teaching of structural language content. Faced with the current problems in the teaching of Portuguese in universities, this research aims to highlight the significance of cultural teaching in Portuguese language education and tries to integrate cultural components into the practice of Portuguese language classes in higher education in mainland China. On the one hand, this research clarifies the close relationship between the teaching of culture and the teaching of PLE, the different cultural genres that should be considered in practice, and also the role of textbooks in the teaching of PLE through culture. On the other hand, using the textbook Cidades do Mar B1, suggestions are made for the application of cultural content in different Portuguese course units and for the future development of Chinese and Portuguese textbooks in mainland China.
