| dc.description.abstract | O presente estudo procura entender se o futebol feminino pode ser um instrumento de soft power na política internacional, mais especificamente qual o impacto causado pela seleção feminina norte-americana na política externa dos EUA. O principal objetivo é compreender se pode contribuir como fator de fortalecimento positivo da imagem dos EUA e principalmente como fator de influência na relação entre os estados, no âmbito das relações internacionais. O estudo vai partir do conceito de soft power descrito por Joseph Nye, que tem por base influenciar por meio da atração, sem recurso a coerção e adotar um ponto de vista construtivista que defende que as relações são socialmente construídas e transformadas através de ideias e crenças. Após uma reflexão bibliográfica, realizámos uma análise do futebol, enquanto fenómeno geral, do futebol feminino e da seleção feminina de futebol norte-americana, em particular, enquanto componente da política externa dos EUA. A investigação foca-se no período de 2015-2019, anos em que se realizaram dois campeonatos mundiais femininos e dos quais a seleção feminina norte-americana se sagrou campeã. Em 2015, estava em funções a administração de Barack Obama e em 2019, a administração de Donald Trump. O ranking da FIFA, mencionado na investigação, refere-se à atualização de Dezembro de 2021. O presente estudo conclui que mais estudos são necessários para responder e desenvolver a pergunta de partida. O benefício que poderia ser derivado do futebol feminino para o soft power americano parece ainda subexplorado, tanto pelos próprios órgãos de decisão americanos como pela literatura atual. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The present study seeks to understand whether women's football can be an instrument of soft power in international politics, with specific attention to the impact caused by the US women's team on US foreign policy. The main objective is to understand if it can contribute as a factor of positive strengthening of the image of the USA and mainly as a factor of influence in the relationship between states, in the scope of international relations. The study will start from the concept of soft power presented by Joseph Nye, which is based on influencing through attraction, without resorting to coercion and adopting a constructivist point of view that defends that relationships are socially constructed and transformed through ideas and beliefs.After a bibliographical reflection, we carried out an analysis of football, as a general phenomenon, of women's football and the US women's football team, in particular, as a component of US foreign policy. The investigation focuses on the period 2015-2019, years in which two women's world championships were held and of which the North American women's team was crowned as champions. In 2015, the administration of Barack Obama was in office and in 2019, the administration of Donald Trump. The FIFA ranking mentioned in the investigation refers to the December 2021 update. The present study concludes that more studies are needed to answer and develop the starting question. The benefit that could be derived from women's football for American soft power still seems to be underexplored, both by the American decision-making bodies themselves and by the current literature. | pt_PT |
