As alterações climáticas representam uma ameaça crescente não apenas para os ecossistemas, mas também para o património cultural material e imaterial. Fenómenos como a subida do nível do mar, a erosão costeira ou as temperaturas extremas colocam em risco sítios arqueológicos, monumentos, coleções e práticas culturais, exigindo respostas integradas entre ciência, património e comunidades. A presente dissertação parte da identificação de uma lacuna crítica: a comunicação entre cientistas climáticos, profissionais do património e comunidades locais revela-se frequentemente insuficiente. Deste modo, emerge a questão central de investigação: quais as competências necessárias a um perfil de mediação capaz de apoiar o património ameaçado pelas alterações climáticas? O objetivo principal consiste em definir um quadro de competências que promova a cooperação interdisciplinar e potencie a transferência de conhecimento entre os diversos stakeholders envolvidos. O estudo desenvolveu-se em cinco eixos: mapeamento de stakeholders e projetos relevantes; entrevistas a peritos; identificação de barreiras à comunicação interdisciplinar; análise de quadros de competências europeus existentes e, por fim, mapeamento de competências. Os resultados evidenciam que a salvaguarda do património cultural requer uma abordagem holística e colaborativa, na qual a mediação assume um papel central ao traduzir dados científicos em ações concretas, acessíveis e participativas. A partir desta análise, foi delineado um perfil de competências que integra literacia climática, comunicação interdisciplinar, mediação cultural e participação comunitária, constituindo um referencial para programas de formação e estratégias de desenvolvimento profissional. O estudo evidencia ainda a necessidade de políticas e práticas mais consistentes que institucionalizem a mediação e reforcem a cooperação interdisciplinar. Ao promover a sua profissionalização, a mediação afirma-se como uma ferramenta estratégica para enfrentar os desafios climáticos e reforçar a resiliência do património cultural e das comunidades que com ele se relacionam.
Climate change represents an increasing threat not only to ecosystems but also to tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Phenomena such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and extreme temperatures endanger archaeological sites, monuments, collections, and cultural practices, demanding integrated responses across science, heritage, and communities. This dissertation arises from the identification of a critical gap: communication between climate scientists, heritage professionals, and local communities is often insufficient. Therefore, the central research question emerges: what competencies are necessary for a mediation profile capable of supporting heritage threatened by climate change? The primary objective is to define a competency framework that promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and facilitates knowledge transfer among the various stakeholders involved. The study was conducted along five axes: mapping relevant stakeholders and projects; interviews with experts; identification of barriers to interdisciplinary communication; analysis of existing European competency frameworks; and, finally, competency mapping. The results demonstrate that safeguarding cultural heritage requires a holistic and collaborative approach, in which mediation plays a central role by translating scientific data into concrete, accessible, and participatory actions. Based on this analysis, a competency profile was developed encompassing climate literacy, interdisciplinary communication, cultural mediation, and community engagement, providing a reference for training programs and professional development strategies. The study also highlights the need for more consistent policies and practices that institutionalize mediation and strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation. By promoting its professionalization, mediation emerges as a strategic tool to address climate challenges and reinforce the resilience of cultural heritage and the communities connected to it.
