Printer manufacturer Xerox had to contend with a difficult market environment characterized
by numerous structural problems. To achieve synergies and to improve its competitiveness the
company attempted to take over the significantly larger PC and printer manufacturer HP at the
beginning of November 2019. HP showed little interest in an acquisition, hence Xerox,
supported by activist investor Carl Icahn, approached HP's shareholders directly. However, the
implementation of takeover defenses and the consequences of the Corona pandemic outbreak
complicated these intentions. Now Xerox CEO John Visentin had to make a decision on how
to proceed, further ambiguity damaged both companies.
