Resumo(s)

The growing demand for portable and energy-efficient devices, combined with rising environmental awareness and advances in AI, is reshaping the worldwide computing landscape. While x86 architectures have traditionally dominated desktop computers, laptops and high-performance systems, ARM processors have been widely used in mobile phones, tablets, and other low-power devices. Yet, recently, ARM-based computers have emerged as a strong alternative to x86, with their modular design, low power consumption, and improving performance making them suitable for both consumer and enterprise applications. The transition by one of the major manufacturers to ARM-based chips in personal computers has demonstrated their potential to rival x86 performance while maintaining greater energy efficiency. However, the factors driving consumer adoption of ARM computers, along with their benefits and challenges compared to x86 in the consumer market, remain largely underexplored. To fill this gap, our study introduces an innovative theoretical model based on UTAUT2 and extended with variables from DOI, TPB, and ELM. A mixed-method approach was used to support our work. Expert interviews contributed directly to developing the model, questionnaire data was gathered from 250 users with different levels of ARM experience, and PLS-SEM was applied to test the model. The analysis revealed that performance expectancy, price value, and perceived product innovativeness are the strongest predictors of behavioral intention, which in turn influences actual use. Compatibility was found to significantly influence both performance expectancy and price value, while efficiency influenced price value. Perceived product innovativeness positively shaped social influence, and environmental concern significantly influenced use behavior. Experts highlighted ARM’s advantages in energy efficiency, flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for AI applications. Software compatibility and reliance on decisions made by manufacturers and software companies are identified as main challenges to overcome in the market. These findings offer a detailed understanding of consumer behavior toward ARM-based computers, extending existing technology adoption models to a new hardware context, and identifies their benefits and challenges. By integrating both technical and nontechnical user perceptions, the study also provides actionable insights for manufacturers, software companies, marketers, and retailers.
