Resumo(s)
There are a number of reasons for alliances to occur between life science companies. Start-up biotech companies face these days challenges related with the lack of money to finance their operations and the inability (lack of resources and competences) to further
develop their pipeline programs and commercialize a final drug. Whereas pharmaceutical companies need to share the risk of their drug development pipelines as well as making their pipelines stronger with more programs and more drug candidates. Alliances between biotech and pharmaceutical companies are not a new topic, although the value and the number of deals between these two types of organizations have increased considerably in the last few years. The purpose of this work is to examine a possible alliance between BIOALVO (a Portuguese biotech company) and BIAL (a Portuguese pharmaceutical company).
As it will be shown throughout this Integrative Work Project (IWP), these two organizations work on the drug development for a similar market, the Central Nervous System (CNS), besides this market, through an alliance between BIAL and BIOALVO, drugs could be developed for other therapeutic areas such as the respiratory and the
Muscular-Skeletal System.
Another important aspect which is explained in a capabilities matrix is the fact that through all the process of the drug development, synergies can happen between both companies if they cooperate, making them better off in the overall. The capabilities matrix will be shown within a possible alliance structure that best fits both organizations strategies.
