This report provides a competitive assessment of a young Portuguese biotech company committed to the R&D of new drugs – BIOALVO – and addresses the best deal strategy to leverage interfirm resource combination with an identified biotech company – Remynd NV. For this analysis, three possible deal strategies for resource combination are confronted: alliance, merger, and acquisition. The first section of the report presents a competitive analysis of BIOALVO allowing
concluding on its competitive position. The identified increasing importance of innovative biotech companies within the pharmaceutical R&D environment, gives BIOALVO strong growth prospects. Still, BIOALVO faces several challenges that may
compromise its ability to evolve into a sustainable biopharmaceutical company. Raising the needed financing for running its drug discovery programs constitutes the main difficulty, especially due to the company’s location and its early stage character yet to achieve validation of its drug R&D processes. The second section of this report provides a detailed analysis of the importance of establishing R&D alliances/partnerships and entering M&A within the current
environment of industry consolidation, and addresses the best strategy to leverage resource and knowledge combination between BIOALVO and Remynd NV. The identified cooperation risks between knowledge intensive competitors and the identified value creation drivers will lead to conclude that an acquisition is the best
strategy for attaining resource combination between both firms and for strategic growth.
