Drawing inspiration from the pioneering studies of Ernst H. Kantorowicz on medieval kingship, as well as from the methodology of Armando Luís de Carvalho Homem regarding the use of legislation for the study of Institutional History, this dissertation aims to examine the laws of Afonso III in order to understand the conceptualisation of medieval kingship during his reign. To contextualise the period in question, attention is given to the legal culture and the training of jurists in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as well as to the impact these figures had within royal courts in Western Europe. Revisiting the works of Kantorowicz and more recent authors, the study seeks to understand the development of notions of kingship in some of the most prominent realms of the time—namely the Holy Roman Empire and France; in the Iberian Peninsula, León and Castile; and finally, Portugal. Narrowing the scope of our approach, we will focus specifically on the reign of Afonso III, taking his legislation as the primary source and examining what it reveals about his centralising reforms, the scope of his governance, and the pacification of the kingdom’s social bodies. Ultimately, the main goal of this dissertation is to carry out an analysis of the vocabulary of power within the legislation and chancery documents, in order to determine how contemporary conceptions of kingship were reflected and constructed, as well as how the king projected his authority through writing. Through this analysis, we may, in the final instance, understand the extent to which the documentation from the reign of Afonso III does or does not reflect the political culture of the thirteenth century.
