O Geoturismo em Portugal tem acompanhado de perto o desenvolvimento desta atividade ao nível internacional, essencialmente ao nível académico, por especialistas em Geologia e Geografia Física.
Destacaram-se a partir da década de 90 do século XX atividades de divulgação da Geodiversidade no programa Geologia no Verão através da iniciativa da Ciência Viva2 , mas o Geoturismo para o turista comum só começou a ser promovida com a criação do Geoparque Naturtejo em 2006 integrado na rede Global de Geoparques da UNESCO.
Nos anos seguintes foram divulgadas atividades de Geoturismo promovidas por instituições académicas de forma a valorizar e consciencializar para a Geodiversidade e Geoconservação, só timidamente o Geoturismo foi sendo integrado em atividades das agências de turismo ou operadores turísticos.
Foi a grande Geodiversidade da Região de Lisboa e imbuído pelo desenvolvimento do Geoturismo em Portugal que deu alento à criação de um pequeno operador turístico3 neste nicho de mercado, a Greenwalk4 .
Os percursos foram estruturados com base em estudos académicos, mas também, com própria metodologia baseada na perspectiva da Geografia Física e recolha de informação do património histórico e cultural. Possibilitando levar o Geoturismo além dos Geossítios identificados pela ProGeo (Visão restrita da Geologia), integrando a interpretação abrangente da Geografia Física (e.g. o modulado, a hidrologia e o clima) e relacionando com as atividades humanas, história e cultura.
Neste trabalho, procura-se demonstrar a importância da Geografia Física na interpretação para o Geoturismo através de alguns exemplos no terreno. Será dada particular atenção ao caso de estudo na área Abano – Abelheira (litoral Noroeste de Cascais), identificando valores abióticos relacionados com particular interesse na interpretação do Plio-Plistocénico e Quaternário5 , servindo de consciencialização da complexidade da relação do clima, hidrologia e modelação do relevo. Balizando e enquadrando a atual problemática das Alterações Climáticas do “Antropocénico 6 numa perspetiva de adaptação e resiliência, tal como já havia sucedido durante o Plio-Plistocénico.
Geotourism in Portugal has closely followed the development of this activity at an international level, essentially at an academic level, by specialists in Geology and Physical Geography. From the 1990’s onwards, activities to promote Geodiversity stood out in the Geology in Geologia do Verão program, through the Ciência Viva initiative, but Geotourism for the common tourist only began to be promoted with the creation of the Naturtejo Geopark in 2006, integrated into the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. In the following years, Geotourism activities promoted by academic institutions were publicized to value and raise awareness about Geodiversity and Geoconservation; only timidly was Geotorusim integrated into the activities of tourism agencies or tour operators. It was the great Geodiversity of the Lisbon Region and the development of Geotourism in Portugal that gave impetus to the creation of a small tourist operator in this market niche, Greenwalk7. The routes were based on academic studies, but also with our own methodology on the perspective of Physical Geography and the collection of information on historical and cultural heritage. Enabling Geotourism to be taken beyond identified Geosites of ProGeo (restricted view of Geology), integrating the comprehensive interpretation of Physical Geography (e.g., relief modulation, hydrology, and climate) and relating it to human activities, history and culture. This work seeks to demonstrate the importance of Physical Geography in the interpretation for Geotourism through some examples in the field. Attention will be given to the case study in the Abano – Abelheira area (Northwest coast of Cascais), identifying abiotic values with particular interest in the interpretation of the Plio-Pleistocene and Quaternary periods, serving to raise awareness of the complexity of the relationship between climate, hydrology and landform. By framing and contextualize the current problem of Climate Change in the “Anthropocene” within a perspective of adaptation and resilience, as had already occurred during the Plio-Plistocene.
