| dc.description.abstract | O final da Grande Guerra trouxe o início do desmembramento do Império AustroHúngaro. Carlos da Áustria herdou um império em crise e em guerra, todos os seus esforços, no seu curto reinado, foram para a paz e para a união dos seus povos, mas fracassou nos dois. Os povos do império queriam a independência total, surgiram revoltas nas ruas que levaram o imperador e a sua família a deixar a pátria. Vão passar por vários exílios, primeiramente, ainda dentro da Áustria, em Eckartsau, seguidamente na Suíça e o último seria na Madeira. Enquanto está na Suíça o imperador tenta, por duas vezes, restaurar o trono na Hungria, mas fracassa. Depois da segunda tentativa o seu destino fica nas mãos dos Aliados representados na Conferência de Embaixadores. Aqui vão decidir e controlar os restantes meses de vida do imperador. Vão discutir questões relativas à sua vigilância, ao seu suporte financeiro e ao controlo dos seus contactos. Esta dissertação procura mostrar como se desenvolveram estas negociações na conferência, entre a conferência e o Governo português e mostrar as várias questões diplomáticas que surgiram durante o exílio dos imperadores no Funchal. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | The end of the Great War marked the beginning of the disintegration of the AustroHungarian Empire. Charles of Austria inherited an empire in crisis and at war. Throughout his short reign, all his efforts were directed toward peace and the unity of his peoples, but he failed on both fronts. The peoples of the empire demanded full independence, and revolts broke out in the streets, forcing the emperor and his family to leave their homeland. They would go through several exiles: first still in Austria, in Eckartsau, then in Switzerland, and finally in Madeira. While in Switzerland, the emperor attempted twice to restore the throne in Hungary, but failed. After the second attempt, the emperor’s fate was placed in the hands of the Allies, represented at the Conference of Ambassadors. There, the powers decided and controlled the last months of his life. They discussed matters concerning his surveillance, financial support, and the control of his contacts. This dissertation seeks to examine how these negotiations unfolded at the conference, between the conference and the Portuguese government, and to highlight the various diplomatic issues that arose during the emperors’ exile in Funchal. | por |
