| dc.description.abstract | As the urgency of climate change intensifies, traditional data-driven communication strategies often fail to translate public awareness into meaningful engagement. This thesis explores how emotionally resonant data storytelling can bridge the gap between cognitive understanding and affective response, particularly in the Portuguese context. Drawing on climate psychology, neuroscience, and design theory, the research investigates the roles of grief, hope, and cultural identity in shaping climate communication. Using a Research-through-Design (RtD) approach, the project develops A Week of Climate Connection, a seven-day analog postcard series that guides participants through an emotional journey from awareness to personal reflection. Each postcard visualizes national climate and energy transition data using metaphor, cultural symbolism, and tactile, emotionally paced design. The format embraces slowness and materiality as alternatives to the abstraction and urgency of digital media. Findings suggest that emotionally grounded design can foster introspection, strengthen memory, and increase personal relevance. While limited by the absence of formal evaluation and scalability challenges, the project offers compelling proof-of-concept. It contributes to emerging discourses on emotional literacy, participatory tools, and culturally contextualized climate communication. Future work should explore hybrid formats, educational settings, and empirical validation. | pt_PT |
