This case retrospects the historical reorganization of CUF by McKinsey. It reviews the first large management consulting project in Portugal, led by the world’s top consultancy firm to the biggest industrial conglomerate in the Iberian Peninsula in the 1960s.
It describes the major recommendations made by McKinsey to face CUF’s increasing structural problems, and it studies the proposed organizational structure and strategic recommendations and the consequent measures that were implemented.
The purpose of this study is to show the importance of external advisory to the strategic management of a company.
