| dc.description.abstract | Tobacco endgame initiatives, particularly “Smokefree New Zealand 2025”, have faced both opposition and support, highlighting a divide in public opinion. This study aims to explore the general public’s perception of these initiatives by highlighting key players that influence people’s attitudes regarding tobacco control measures. A total of 4,010 YouTube comments were extracted from news reports’ videos, about tobacco endgame measures in New Zealand, from 2021 to 2024. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combined text mining with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the conceptual framework. Results proved that trust in policymakers significantly increased the perceived effectiveness, while perceived authoritarianism had no significant impact. Additionally, perceived effectiveness positively influenced both perceived social benefits and social risks. These findings suggest that policymakers should prioritize fostering public trust and transparent communication, to strengthen legitimacy and mitigate any resistance from the public, and to successfully implement tobacco endgame strategies. | pt_PT |
