Europe faces an aging population never seen before. This is due in part to low fertility levels presented by the 27 EU Member States, without exception. Maintaining this trend, Europe will face serious sustainability problems. In order to reverse this situation, european politicians try to find the best solutions. This study, qualitative, simple descriptive, aims to make a comparative analysis of the existing childbearing policies in 27 EU countries. We used the document research and literature research as methods of data collection. There is a wide variety of maternity, paternity and parental leaves in the 27 European Union countries, as regards the duration, payment, eligibility and flexibility. The relationship between fertility rates and childbearing policies is not linear. However, there are some characteristics of policies, like gender equality and the ability that countries have to help families to reconcile their family life with work, that seem to be crucial in influencing fertility levels.
