This master’s project primarily aims to analyze the career of the geographer Carminda Cavaco, with an emphasis on studying her photographic collection, preserved in the Photo library of the Centre for Geographical Studies at the Institute of Geography and Territorial Planning of the University of Lisbon (CEG-IGOT-ULisboa). The collection consists of a significant number of photographs and slides, dated between the early 1960s and the early 1980s. It reflects extensive fieldwork conducted in various locations and countries, with a special focus on the Algarve region. This study seeks not only to recover Carminda Cavaco's photographic archive, but also to establish a connection between the collected images and her publications, where, in addition to documenting the space, she creates visual narratives that complement and enrich the territorial studies. The project offers a critical reading of the use of photography as a research tool in Geography. The study will also explore the importance of photography and fieldwork both in observation and document collection, as well as in the development and presentation of research findings.
