In the content of the thesis, we aim to establish how the first wave of Feminism was paramount in achieving of women’s right to vote. Universal suffrage represents a relatively modern political idea, but one that quickly made its way from the circles of philosophy and avant-garde thinkers, to the masses. And, thus, led to a significant number of changes in a short period, considering the historical scale. In less than a century Europe went from a continent ruled by despots to one governed in the name of the people. During the XIXth and XXth century women were at the forefront of the fight for universal suffrage and political rights. The suffrage would not came to be universal until after The Great War when women got what was theirs– political representations. Electoral rights helped women to function as free agents and move towards the furthering of gender equality, effort still ongoing today. We carried out the research guided by the historical method, analyzing distinct socio-political context in time to come to a understanding of why women were deprived for do long of the political and civil rights. We furthered our understanding by employing Marxist based theory to conclude that majority of women were only deemed for household labor and child rearing. Finally, we delved into how an Intersectional lens comes into play regarding women’s rights and the universal suffrage. It was, at large, harder for women of color, either native women, inhabitants of so-called colonies and of African descent to claim their electoral rights, but it does not change, they were, since the beginning, pioneers of the suffragist and civil rights movements.pt_PT
