Resumo(s)
The present study aims to compare the hospital performance in the Internal Medicine service on Hospital da Luz and five Portuguese hospitals. The hospitals considered, beside Hospital da Luz, include Hospital Garcia de Orta, Hospital Fernando Fonseca, Hospital de Santo António, Hospital de Santa Maria and Hospital de S. Sebastião. Hospital da Luz is the largest private investment ever made in health care sector in Portugal in which Internal Medicine Service is given a special emphasis, namely through the (allegedly) ”different functional organization” of the Hospital. As such, the comparison of Hospital da Luz with the public Hospitals became interesting.
The control variables used include age, gender, length of stay and principal diagnostic grouped according to the major categories of ICD-9. The two main performance indicators are length of stay and the death probability of a patient. It was found that admission to the Internal Medicine service of Hospital da Luz rather than on the group of the considered public hospitals, corresponds to a reduction, on average, on the length of stay and a decrease on the probability of dying, all the other
variables constant. We interpret these results as a first piece of evidence suggesting an advantage role of Internal Medicine service of Hospital da Luz.
