Synthesis of different triazene derivatives and evaluation of their activity against uropathogens

dc.description.abstractThe need for new antimicrobials arises from the increasing resistance of bacteria to current antibiotics. As bacteria become resistant to commonly used antibiotics, it becomes more difficult to treat infections. This has become a major public health concern and has led to a pressing need for the development of new antibiotics with different mechanisms of action and preventive strategies. Moreover, in healthcare settings, medical devices, such as urinary catheters, can provide a suitable environment for the growth of microorganisms, which can lead to infections. In this thesis, it is presented the use of 1,3-diaryltriazenes as antimicrobial agents for the prevention and combat of urinary tract infections (UTI). To achieve this goal, a set of symmetric and asymmetric aryltriazenes were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods. All compounds were tested for their activity against different bacteria and fungus that commonly cause urinary tract infections and the most active compound was incorporated in a surface coating. Also the cytotoxicity of the compounds was assessed against HaCat cells under the tested conditions. The surface coating was done with a 3D printer and used hydrogel inks. Coatings were tested against planktonic S. aureus and E. faecalis and their ability to inhibit their biofilm formation. This family of compounds and coating showed potential for its use against some UTI pathogens but needs further development for its practical use.pt_PT
