A presente dissertação dedica-se ao estudo da figura do Senhor D. Duarte (1541-1576), Duque de Guimarães e Condestável do Reino, procurando restituir-lhe o protagonismo que a historiografia, até agora, lhe tem negado. Partindo de uma análise crítica de fontes manuscritas, crónicas e testamentos, este estudo reconstrói a trajetória pessoal, política e espiritual de um dos membros mais relevantes da família real portuguesa do século XVI.
Filho do Infante D. Duarte e, por isso, neto de D. Manuel I, e de D. Isabel de Bragança, o Senhor D. Duarte situava-se na confluência entre duas linhagens de prestígio – a Casa Real e a Casa de Bragança – circunstância que marcou a sua identidade e o seu percurso.
A dissertação estrutura-se em quatro partes: as origens familiares e o contexto formativo; a integração no espaço da corte e o exercício do cargo de Condestável; as suas relações políticas e afetivas; e, por fim, a construção da sua imagem através das descrições dos cronistas. Esta abordagem articula a História Política e Social com a História das Emoções, procurando compreender como sentimentos como a lealdade, a devoção ou o luto moldaram as práticas e representações da nobreza quinhentista.
Este estudo revela uma figura que conciliou a ação militar e política com uma profunda religiosidade, num período de intensa transformação cultural e espiritual marcada pela Contrarreforma e pela influência da Companhia de Jesus na corte portuguesa. Através do estudo da sua Casa, património e redes de sociabilidade, é possível reconstituir a posição do Senhor D. Duarte, que assumiu um papel de expressão exemplar do ideal de virtude e serviço régio no Portugal do século XVI.
This dissertation is devoted to the study of Dom Duarte (1541-1576), Duke of Guimarães and Constable of Portugal, seeking to restore some protagnism that historiography has so far denied him. Drawing on a critical analysis of manuscripts, chronicles, and testamentary sources, this research reconstructs the personal, political, and spiritual trajectory o fone of the most relevant members of the portuguese royal family in the sixteenth century. Born of the union between Infante Dom Duarte, son of King Manuel I, and Isabel of Braganza, Dom Duarte stood at the intersection of two of the most prestigious lineages of the kingdom – the Royal House and the House of Braganza – a circumstance that profoundly shaped his identity and life course. The dissertation is structured into four main sections: the familial origins and formative context; his integration into the royal court and the exercise of the office of Constable; his political and personal relationships; and finally, the construction of his image through the analysis of the chronicles. The approach combines Politcal and Social History with the History of Emotions, seeking to understand how feelings such as loyalty, devotion, and grief influenced the practices and representations of the portuguese nobility during the 16th century. The study reveals a figure who combined political and militar action with a fervente religiosity, in a period marked by the profound cultural and spiritual transformations of the Counter-Reformation and the growing influence of The Jesuits at the portuguese court. Through the study of his household, patrimony, and networks of sociability, it is possible to reconstruct the position of Dom Duarte, who embodied in an exemplar way the ideal of virtue and royal servisse in the sixteenth-century Portugal.
