In Portugal, the topic of cod is widely addressed in political and economic spheres, presenting a significant gap from an archaeological perspective. However, along the Portuguese coast, there are numerous sites that still today hold valuable information about activities related to the acquisition and preparation of cod. The spatial organization and its diversification, when analyzed, allow an understanding of the area's development and contribute to the comprehension of fundamental technical and social issues in its history. Studies that address contemporary societies enable cultural, economic, political, and social issues to be better understood through the memories of those who lived them. In this way, they provide a more comprehensive approach to the sites and practices carried out there. Thus, this dissertation aims to use an archaeological perspective, based on the exploration and inventory of sites, complementing the research with a theoretical foundation to deepen the understanding of the history and spaces related to cod during the 19th and 20th centuries. Throughout this process, the intention is to answer the questions formulated at the beginning of this project, contributing to filling some gaps created by the lack of studies on the topic.
