This thesis examines the teacher shortage crisis in Portugal, focusing on the potential role of retired teachers in addressing both short- and long-term staffing challenges. Through a review of literature, policy analysis, and international examples, it assesses the effectiveness of recent initiatives—such as “Mais Aulas Mais Sucesso”—and proposes three key policy recommendations: using retired teachers as mentors, improving the attractiveness of the teaching profession, and expanding alternative pathways into teaching. While limited to secondary data, the study highlights the need for comprehensive, evidence-based strategies to ensure a sustainable and equitable teacher workforce in Portugal.eng
