A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the Nova School of Business and Economics
This work project examines how negative past performance influences the way an organization strategically adapts to its environment. It argues that organizations experiencing a succession of negative performance outcomes, may adopt two types of reactive mechanisms, based on two theories: organizational learning and threat-rigidity. These mechanisms will in turn influence some internal factors such as: managerial reputation; organizational structure; and managerial succession plans, facilitating or not the strategical adaptation of current strategies towards external changes. An empirical analysis of four real company cases provides initial support for some of these prepositions.eng
