A relação de Portugal com o mar reflete séculos de interação humana com o Atlântico, desde a Antiguidade até à expansão ultramarina e aos conflitos contemporâneos. Beneficiando de uma localização estratégica e de uma paisagem única, o Algarve funcionou como ponto de encontro e passagem de povos, sendo também ponte entre o Atlântico e o Mediterrâneo. O património costeiro e marítimo do Algarve evidencia o seu papel crucial na navegação, no comércio e na exploração marítima. Apesar dos desafios para preservar este legado, a costa algarvia continua a ser um rico campo de investigação, permitindo aprofundar o conhecimento histórico e promover a valorização. Partindo do conhecimento sobre o património marítimo e subaquático no Algarve, esta dissertação pretende desenvolver propostas para a sua valorização e para a comunicação de ciência, evidenciando o potencial da região como um terreno fértil para o turismo cultural e para a promoção da arqueologia.
Portugal's relationship with the sea reflects centuries of human interaction with the Atlantic, from ancient times to overseas expansion and contemporary navigation. Benefiting from a strategic location and unique landscape, the Algarve has served as a meeting point and passageway for peoples, as well as a bridge between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Algarve's coastal and maritime heritage highlights its crucial role in navigation, trade, and maritime exploration. Despite the challenges of preserving this legacy, the Algarve coast remains a rich field of research, allowing for a deeper understanding of history and promoting appreciation. Based on knowledge of the maritime and underwater heritage in the Algarve, this dissertation aims to develop proposals for its appreciation and for science communication, highlighting the region's potential as fertile ground for cultural tourism and the promotion of archaeology.
