International mobility of researchers has a key role in the creation of excellent research. By developing a novel composite index of international mobility of researchers in the EU space, this paper aims at understanding the differences that are still present to this day between the research environments of the European Union’s member states. Gender differences are highlighted. A distinction between North and South Europe is well apparent in our results. Substantial differences between countries’ research environments are documented
