Resumo(s)
Using a cross-section of 155 franchising chains operating in Portugal, ownership strategies are analysed in order to understand the dynamic of dual distribution over time. Variables based on agency problems and resource constraints explanations are tested to assess how and why the proportion of company-owned outlets changes. Empirical results support that firms with more years of franchising experience rely on franchisee ownership, confirming the agency theory. Firms sharply decrease their proportion of company ownership during the first two to four years and, then, it tends to vary around 20% to 40%, facing the minimum value close to the sixteenth year.
