Innovation for complex societal challenges increasingly relies on Public-Private Innovation Ecosystems (PPIEs), making the study of their governance essential. This thesis examines drivers of effective governance of PPIEs through a qualitative, multi-case study of three PPIEs:
New Space Portugal, EuroHPC JU, and AI MAPS. The findings show that clarity on actors and structural set-up, combined with the interplay of formal and informal coordination mechanisms, are essential factors for effective governance. Informal mechanisms such as trust and honest
communication should be cultivated and documented. The research highlights the importance of relational dynamics, flexibility along the PPIE’s lifecycle, and context-specific governance design
