In contemporary society, news consumption has become a way of understanding the world around us. While regional press holds the duty of producing proximity journalism, this characteristic is not exclusive to regional media — it is inherent to journalistic practice as a whole. This internship report aims to study the regional representation in Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), based on the premise that fulfilling the public service mission also entails representing the entire Portuguese territory. To address this issue, the following research questions were formulated: What level of representativeness do regional and/or local content have in RTP's main newscasts? What are the newsworthiness criteria that guide proximity content? What are the predominant themes in regional news with national coverage? The research methodology followed three main phases: participant observation during the internship; content analysis of 168 editions of the Jornal da Tarde and Telejornal throughout 2024; and semi-structured interviews. The articulation between these three methods allowed for a cross-analysis that revealed how RTP’s main newscasts maintain an editorial agenda that prioritizes topics related to urban centers, thus perpetuating the notion of insufficient media coverage of regional matters. From the 4235 news pieces analyzed, only 278 were classified as regional, representing just 7% of the total news content. The “society” section stood out among regional items, along with the news values of significance, followed by negativity.
