Resumo(s)

In an increasingly interconnected world, proficiency in English has become an essential skill, placing growing demands on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. However, traditional EFL reading materials fail to take into consideration the potential of literary texts and the diverse forms they encompass—such as poetry, plays, fiction, and other genres—thereby limiting students’ emotional engagement and critical development. This action research, conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year as part of the Master’s Practicum in English Foreign Language Education at a Lisbon school cluster, investigates how the integration of authentic literary texts can foster students’ emotional and intellectual engagement in EFL classrooms. This study examines the affective and cognitive potential of literature to promote meaningful learning experiences. Data were collected from ninth- and tenth-grade students through observation, classroom activities, and reflective instruments. The findings suggest that authentic literary texts, when supported by well-structured pre-, during-, and post-reading tasks, significantly enhance affective involvement, critical thinking, and linguistic competence. The study concludes that literature can serve as a bridge between linguistic and emotional dimensions of language learning, supporting a more holistic, humanistic, and fruitful approach to EFL pedagogy.
