The determination of the installed tensile force in cables, based on ambient vibration measurements, has been widely used over the last decades. This methodology is based on the vibrating chord theory which relates the natural vibrating frequencies of the chord with the installed tensile force. Due to the advances in technology and the expertise gain over the years in studying structural cables, the assessment of the installed tensile force in cables using vibration measurements is, nowadays, accepted by the scientific community as an accurate and expedite experimental technique. Therefore the methodology is widely used to assess the tensile force of structural elements that do not have pre-installed instrumentation for continuing monitoring. In this context, and with the collaboration of Infraestruturas de Portugal, the described technique was applied to several pre-stress and stay cables of Salgueiro Maia Bridge in Santarém. The results were successfully compared and validated using design force information, measurements provided by pre-installed load cells and results of numerical modelling.
