The culture section has a duty to explain cultural events and products in a way that is clear and accessible to everyone, so that access to this right can be democratized. At the same time, it is their responsibility to create a public space for reflection and analysis on issues that are of interest to society. Nowadays, although the Internet has gained a great deal of prominence, television is still one of the media with the most power and, therefore, it is interesting to understand the prominence it gives to cultural journalism. In this way, this research aims to analyze the journalistic coverage of culture in the news programs with the highest prime-time audience, through an analysis of programs from RTP and RTP3 and SIC and SIC Notícias, more specifically the news programs Telejornal, 360°, Grande Edição and Jornal da Noite. This study compares the coverage of a public broadcaster and a private broadcaster and, in addition, between informative and generalist channels. In order to make this possible, the following starting question was defined: “How is culture covered in the news programs with the largest prime-time audience, in the cases of SIC, SIC Notícias, RTP and RTP3?”. In addition, the following research questions were defined: What are the editorial characteristics of the coverage of culture in these television news segments?; Which areas of culture get the most attention?; What are the main similarities and differences in the journalistic coverage of culture on these channels, both in terms of public and private channels and in terms of news and generalist channels? To answer the research objective, a content analysis was carried out between October 2024 and January 2025 on 56 episodes from a systematically constructed sample, complemented by interviews with journalists from the stations. The results show that none of the channels analyzed give much prominence to culture, because the average of cultural news items was one per segment. Showed that among the generalist and news channels, the former give more prominence to the section, as do the public stations, to the detriment of the private ones.
