Hosting a mega sport event is an endeavour of enormous cost. With past literature having shown that these events are economically not beneficial. Mega sport events such as the Olympic Games or the FIFA Football World Cup are underlying a trend of being hosted by non-democratic countries. Political leaders use the virtue of these events to please the population in order to legitimize their rule. This work examines the impact of mega sport events on the likelihood of the incumbency of a country’s political leader within a worldwide sample since the 1960s.pt_PT
