This thesis evaluates Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) by analyzing its financial
performance, strategic investments, and market positioning within the semiconductor
industry. AMD’s growth trajectory has been fueled by its focus on high-margin segments such
as data centers, embedded systems, and AI-driven hardware, reflected in a gross margin
improvement from 38% in 2018 to 51% in 2022. The report explores AMD’s geographical
performance, highlighting the U.S. as its largest revenue contributor since 2023, surpassing
China due to regulatory and economic constraints. Key acquisitions, including Xilinx and
Pensando, have enhanced AMD’s adaptive computing capabilities and diversified its revenue
streams.
Despite challenges such as declining Capex-to-D&A ratios and stagnating ROIC, AMD has
maintained a strong financial position with low leverage and substantial liquidity, supporting
future innovation and market expansion. The Embedded and Data Center segments have
counterbalanced weaker performance in Client and Gaming divisions, underscoring AMD’s
strategic adaptability. Valuation models, including DCF, APV, and EVA, indicate an implied
share price range of $137.57 to $163.04, suggesting a significant upside potential of up to
28.47%.
This study concludes with a BUY recommendation, emphasizing AMD’s robust
fundamentals, strategic investments, and capacity to leverage growth opportunities in AI,
gaming, and cloud computing. While industry cyclicality and competition pose risks, AMD’s
financial flexibility and market positioning make it a strong candidate for long-term
investment.
