The Cultural Association Moinho da Juventude (Windmill of Youth) is a non-profit organization which represents an important source of inspiration and motivation for children, young people, adults and senior people. The Windmill was born in the early 1980s in Amadora, specifically in a neighborhood called Cova da Moura. The whole neighborhood was built thanks to the hard work of local residents who managed to realize a self-financing project starting to build the quarter from the very beginning. According to a significant part of the public opinion the Association is situated in one of the most dangerous place in Lisbon. Cova da Moura is always described as a place without prosperity and positivity, controlled by the organized crime. This work focuses on one of the several aspects of the Windmill, the educative and formative one, which has always represented a guideline for all the activities of the Association. The goal of this work is to show how something that is commonly considered marginal turn out to be fundamental in the educative and instructive path of every individual. At the Windmill of Youth formality and informality are mixed together in order to prove how the individual and the collective dimensions contribute to create a whole by their fusion.
