- Remote Sensing practicalsPublication . Caetano, Mario; Gomes da Costa, Hugo Alexandre; NOVA Information Management School. Universidade NOVA de LisboaThe main purpose of this book is to prepare students to carry out practical projects aimed at extracting information from satellite images for land-cover monitoring. The book guides students through the acquisition of key concepts in digital satellite image processing by means of practical exercises. The various stages of a remote sensing project are covered, ranging from the downloading of satellite images to information extraction using automatic classifiers and the evaluation of the accuracy of the resulting products. The data provided here have been prepared so that students can work through the book autonomously. This book is organised into three parts: (1) a tutorial on obtaining satellite images from the Internet; (2) a tutorial on satellite image processing using ArcGIS Pro; and (3) digital satellite image processing exercises. In the first part, students learn how to obtain satellite images for a given area. In the second part, they learn how to carry out the most common digital image processing procedures, such as the creation of colour composites, vegetation indices, supervised and unsupervised image classification, change detection, and thematic accuracy assessment. Finally, the third part includes practical exercises designed to allow students to apply the procedures previously learned. Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite images are used, enabling students to become familiar with the specific characteristics of two of the most widely used satellite missions. The exercises are accompanied by a set of questions that draw attention to important aspects of the interpretation of the results obtained. Students are encouraged to use the subset of Sentinel-2 data provided by the lecturer to complete the tasks in the first and second parts of the book. This approach prepares students for the exercises in the third and final part, for which data are also made available via the link provided above. ArcGIS Pro was selected for the second and third parts of the book because it is used in other curricular units. As a result, students do not need to spend significant time learning new software. However, the tutorial may also be followed using alternative software if desired. For this reason, advanced tools available in ArcGIS Pro are not explored, although students are free to further investigate the software’s capabilities. This approach aims to keep the tutorial as software-neutral as possible. The tutorial was originally written for ArcGIS Pro version 3.1.0, and has been updated to version 3.6.1 where relevant.
- Living with DementiaPublication . Lopes, Henrique; Information Management Research Center (MagIC) - NOVA Information Management SchoolBeing an informal caregiver of someone with Dementia is an act of personal courage and a necessary response that the family, as a whole, places upon a person or a small group of family members. This study is an in-depth portrayal of the perceptions, challenges and hopes of informal caregivers in Portugal. By exploring 14 areas of caregivers’ daily life, it offers a comprehensive perspective on the reality of caregiving, with the aim of identifying solutions and helping to develop responses that meet their needs and those of People with Dementia.
- Remote sensing practicalsPublication . Caetano, Mário Sílvio Rochinha de Andrade; Costa, Hugo Alexandre Gomes daThe main purpose of this book is to prepare the student to carry out practical projects to extract information from satellite images for land cover monitoring. This book guides the student to the acquisition of concepts of digital processing of satellite images through practical exercises. Various stages of a remote sensing project are covered, ranging the downloading of satellite images, extraction of information with automatic classifiers, and the evaluation of the accuracy of the products obtained. The data provided here have been prepared so that the student can follow this book autonomously. This book consists of three parts: (1) tutorial for obtaining satellite images on the Internet, (2) satellite image processing tutorial in ArcGIS Pro, and (3) digital satellite image processing exercises. In the first part the student learns how to obtain satellite images for a certain area. Second, the student learns how to execute in a specific software the most common procedures of digital image processing, such as creation of coloured composites, vegetation indices, supervised and unsupervised image classification, change detection, and thematic accuracy assessment. Finally, the third part includes practical exercises designed for the student to apply the procedures previously learned. Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite images are used, which allows the student to gain sensitivity to the specificities of two of the most used satellite missions. The exercises are accompanied by a set of questions that point the student to important aspects of the interpretation of the results obtained. It is proposed the student to use the subset of Sentinel-2 data made available by the professor to perform the tasks of the first and second parts of this book. This procedure enables the student to get prepared for the exercises of the third and last part, for which data are also provided through the link provided above. In choosing the software for the second and third parts of the book, ArcGIS Pro is preferred because is used in other curricular units. Thus, the student will not take much time in learning new software, thereby focusing mostly in learning remote sensing, putting theoretical concepts into practice and developing generic and transferable skills on digital image processing. Thus, advanced tools available in ArcGIS Pro are not explored in this book, but students are free to explore in more depth the potential offered by the software. This tutorial was written for ArcGIS Pro 3.1.0.

- Understanding over-indebtedness in Portugal: descriptive and predictive models.Publication . Vanneschi, Leonardo; Pinto, DiegoOver-indebtedness is a recurring problem in Portugal. After facing different economic cycles, between financial crises and prosperity periods, Portuguese consumers have been striving to keep their household finances stable and avoid being over-indebted. This project aims to gain insights on over-indebtedness, from different perspectives that range from the social to the economic point of view. It examines over-indebtedness from a psychological and from a data science perspective. In particular, we suggest that the systemic impact of financial crisis in Portugal not only promotes over-indebtedness, but it crafts a specific profile of over-indebted consumers which may be distinguished from other profiles, ranging from the emphasis on lack of self-regulation and careless management of one’s budget to other causal factors such as consumerism, crisis, and unemployment. Given this scenario, this project proposes the use of Machine Learning (ML) for developing descriptive and predictive models, to understand the influencing factors of over-indebtedness on Portuguese consumers and will be used for establishing consumer clusters and guidelines for over-indebtedness regulation and consumer financial empowerment.
