- Photosynthetic cell factories from moss: OMICS-guided overexpression of candidate bottleneck genes in the terpenoid pathway of Physcomitrium patensPublication . De Sousa Mourinho Sordo, José Miguel; Becker, Jörg-Dieter; Horn , Armin"Terpenoids, the largest class of organic chemicals, are used in several industries, such as perfume, food, and pharmaceuticals. Due to their high demand and limited natural production, methods like chemical synthesis and heterologous expression are explored. However, these methods are complex. An alternative, sustainable approach involves using plants as biofactories, with the moss Physcomitrium patens emerging as a promising candidate due to its unique characteristics like a dominant haploid generation and fast growth in axenic conditions. In prior research, time-series RNA-seq data unveiled that salt stress enhanced the expression of rate-limiting enzymes in terpenoid pathways. Based on previous work, we hypothesized that the overexpression or knockout of established rate-limiting genes in the terpenoid precursor pathway (DXS1.D and HMGR1), as well as R2R3-MYB transcription factors with expression patterns correlated to these bottlenecks, would influence terpenoid biosynthesis(...)"
