The collection of food in waste bins is usually associated with the idea of poverty and food needs of people in distress. The existence of a group of people who collect wasted food without being in a troubled economic situation leads to reflect on the symbolism of this gesture and the meanings attributed to trash in capitalist and consumerist Western society. This research seeks to investigate the connections between the US-born Freegan movement, in the early 21st, century and the reality of the people, the gleaners of Lisbon, who participate in the informal food recycling activity in certain supermarket dumpsters. Based on the theory of Environmental Anthropology and Food Anthropology, this dissertation shows how Lisbon’s dimension has some peculiar characteristics and can offer interesting clues to reflect not only on the problem of food waste but also on critical environmental issues.
