This review analysis the contribution of Duncan Simpson’s book O Estado Novo e o Salazarismo to the historiography about the relationship between the Portuguese political regime and Catholic Church in Portugal since Salazar took office as minister of Finances in 1928, during the military ditactorship government, to his political death in 1968. Although expressing some disagreements, the reviewer considers that the author achieves to demonstrate his main thesis that the Catholic Church was more a supporter than a victim of Salazarism.
