O presente artigo pretende apresentar um projecto de doutoramento em curso sobre as vilas e cidades portuárias do Algarve no período medieval (1249‐1521). As perspectivas de análise deste doutoramento irão incidir sobre a origem e evolução desses centros urbanos, o seu relacionamento com os poderes presentes (como a Coroa e as Ordens Militares), as características da organização social e das actividades económicas. Uma vez apresentado o objecto de estudo e as problemáticas que pretendemos desenvolver, procurámos enquadrar a tese no panorama historiográfico nacional e internacional sobre o tema, assim como apresentar a documentação compulsada até ao momento e as metodologias utilizadas no seu levantamento e análise. The objective of this paper is to present a PhD project on port cities in the Algarve from 1249 to 1521. The perspectives of analysis of this PhD will focus on the origin and evolution of urban centers, their relationship with the present powers (such as the Crown or the Military Orders) and the characteristics of social organization and economic activities. Once presented the object of study and the problems we intend to analyse, we tried to integrate our project within the national and internacional historiographical context, as well as present the documentation assembled so far and the methodologies used in their gathering and analysis.
