Although there is no clear, uncontroversial and encompassing definition of collocation, as they are still subject of discussion between specialists, collocations are undoubtedly a phenomenon of great research potential. Maybe for these reasons they are crucial structures for any lexicographic theory and practice, as for teaching/learning foreign languages (Fontenelle, 1994: 47). Despite being common knowledge that the collocations are as indispensable as problematic to learners of a foreign language and, therefore, should play an important role in foreign language classes, students' difficulties in the production of collocations have still not been target of a thorough investigation. Bearing in mind this gap, we propose, through the analysis of texts produced by students of Portuguese as a Second Language, to draw up a detailed study on the use of collocations by students of three levels of Portuguese L2 to, then, do a detailed description of the errors found. We also have as a goal to draw comparisons between the productions of foreign students and native Portuguese. Finally, we will also make a comparison between errors produced in the context of machine translation, since these, although not being human errors, may present certain similarities to errors produced by foreign students.
