Resumo(s)
Using the translation of Cicero’s De Officiis in medieval Portuguese (called Livro dos Oficios), I intend to contribute to the analysis of the construction ser + de + infinitivo that appears frequently in the text. To find out the modal values that this expression transmits in the medieval translation, and based on the Theory of Enunciative Operations (in particular in what regards deontic modality), I will compare the examples found in the text with the Latin constructions that are the source of the translation. Besides this, I will analyze examples in modern Portuguese, in order to find if nowadays it transmits the same modal values that it had in medieval times.
