Nos verões de 2012, 2014 e 2015 trabalhei nos alpes suíços como guardadora de
vacas Eringer.* Estas são essencialmente criadas para torneios, nos quais lutam contra os seus
pares, recebendo a vencedora o título de “rainha”. Num desses verões, entre vários conselhos,
disse-me o antigo pastor: “tu tens que ser a rainha”. Este trabalho de projecto, do qual resulta o
filme Vacas e Rainhas, debruça-se sobre essa mesma relação de poder entre homem e animal.
De uma possível história da domesticação animal, para a invenção do conceito de raça, passando
pelo lugar que outros animais que não o homem têm ocupado no pensamento recente no seio da
Antropologia, até à forma como “a vaca” tem sido representada em vários filmes, pergunta-se se
será possível ter acesso a um ponto de vista da vaca enquanto indivíduo.
In the summers of 2012, 2014 and 2015 I worked in the Swiss Alps herding Hérens cows. These are essentially kept for tournaments, where individuals fight against their peers, with the winner receiving the title of "Queen". One of these summers, among other advice, an old shepherd said to me: "You have to be the queen." This project, which resulted in the film ‘Cows and Queens’, focuses on the relationship of power between man and animal. From the history of animal domestication; to the invention of race; to the place that other-thanhuman animals have occupied in recent anthropological concepts; and the ways that "the cow" is represented in film, one wonders if it is possible to gain access to the cow’s point of view.
