Resumo(s)
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools have emerged as transformative technologies
with significant potential to revolutionize tourism and travel experiences, yet their application
in travel planning remains underexplored in current literature. Therefore, this study follows a
systematic approach to understand travellers’ needs, challenges and preferences in trip
planning through a review of current literature and industry best practices to develop a
practical framework aimed at providing guidance on how GAI can assist travellers throughout
various stages of their trips and how to optimally utilize these tools. The research follows a
design science research (DSR) methodology, incorporating a systematic literature review (SLR)
following PRISMA guidelines to study the current state of GAI applications in tourism and
human interaction with these technologies. From this, a framework is developed that assists
users across the entire travel cycle and provides a set of prompt recommendations and
strategies for optimizing ChatGPT’s utilization in travel-related decisions. The framework is
validated through a set of qualitative semi-structured interviews with participants from
diverse backgrounds. The analysis of the interviews and the uses of the framework in
hypothetical scenarios demonstrates significant benefits of GAI application in tourism and
identifies key limitations that establish foundations for future research into developing better
frameworks and deepening the understanding of strategies for improved travel experiences.
The goal of this research is to provide travellers with a systematic approach to utilize GAI tools
throughout their journeys, contributing to both practical tourism applications and theoretical
understanding of human-AI interaction in travel contexts. Therefore, this study aims to help
travellers optimize their trip planning and experiences and advance scientific knowledge in
the intersection of GAI and tourism. The findings provide important implications for travellers
seeking to enhance their planning processes, tourism practitioners exploring AI integration,
and researchers advancing GAI’s diverse applications.
