Resumo(s)
Making efforts to deal with and prevent environmental crises is crucial. It is therefore necessary
to adopt measures to encourage the use of sustainable technologies, such as solar photovoltaic
(PV) panels. They convert solar energy into electricity, a solution that has several advantages
regarding the reduction of emissions, as well as economic benefits. Based on a sample of 233
respondents and using the partial least squares (PLS) method, this research analyses the factors
that lead Portuguese households to decide on whether to install solar PV panels, as well as the
results of this use. The findings of the study reveal that in the full sample, the intention to use
solar PV panels is positively influenced by hedonic motivations, habit, environmental
knowledge, and facilitating conditions. The factor that presents the highest impact on the
intention to use and actual usage is habit. Moreover, facilitating conditions is the construct with
the second highest impact on the intention to use. Also, an important moderator identified is the
moderation effect of pro-environmental behaviour between the use of solar panels and
perceived well-being. Additionally, a multigroup analysis is performed to test if differences
between subgroups with different ages are statistically significant. The analysis of subsamples
reveals a stronger statistically significant difference between younger and older groups in the
relationship between the intention to use and actual use of solar PV panels, as well as in the
relationship between the use of solar PV panels and perceived task performance. In sum, this
study provides meaningful insights into the individuals’ motivations to use this type of
sustainable technology.
