The central problem of this study concerns the reconstruction of the governance archives between Brazil and Portugal and the construction of the history of custody, which is absent in the archival catalogues but present in the negotiation processes. The thesis has two main objectives in order to address these problems: (i) to describe the process of building Brazilian archives during the 19th and 20th centuries, by identifying the processes of negotiating the archives of the governors of Colonial Brazil acquired by Brazilian archival organisations in Portugal and, pari passu, to clarify the process of deconstructing Portuguese personal, family and institutional archives so that the collection of Brazilian archival organisations could be formed; (ii) to promote the theoretical framework, within the scope of History, Archival Science and Social Sciences, regarding the study of documents that prove the acquisition of archives from former colonies as primary sources in the debate on Contemporary History. The contributions expected include the identification of administrative documents that prove the acquisition of colonial governance archives, the mapping and biographical and/or institutional study of contemporary figures involved in the process of negotiating the governance archives; the construction of the Catalogue of Negotiation Processes of Colonial Governance Archives established by Brazil; the construction of the narrative on the path and history of custody that aims to corroborate with Historiography, Historical Archival Science and Social Sciences.
