This dissertation in anthropology examines practices and discourses associated to the (post)rural house drawing on case studies in Ourem (Center of Portugal) and Champigny-surMarne (France). The research explores building trajectories and uses of dwellings in Portuguese villages in the past century and reveals housing types corresponding to three periods with different socio-economic sceneries: the “house of rural workers” (1900-1960), associated with agriculture; the “house of the emigrant” (1970-2015), related to emigration and the profound changes in the countryside; and the “emblematized house” (1990-2015), connected to the reification of tradition. The analysis extends to homes of Portuguese residents in the suburbs of Paris in the last fifty years and reflects significant changes in the ways individuals relate to the fields, making them closer to urban realities. Comparative readings around formal and functional trends in domestic architecture, expressions of transnationalism, genealogy representations, gender and reification of tradition associated with the construction and use of the (post-)rural house support its articulation with other social practices and the identification of (dis)continuities and reconfigurations in the expressions of social groups joined together by the realms of the house, the countryside and emigration.
