Football tactics went through a continuous change throughout the 2010s, shaped by shifts in strategic philosophies and the increasing physical and technical demands of the game. This thesis explores how tactical systems adapted over the decade, focusing on formations, playing styles, and their impact on success rates among Europe’s elite clubs. The study analyzes the correlation between these tactical choices and key performance indicators such as points per match and goals scored, using data from dominant clubs in Europe’s top five leagues — Barcelona, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain. Graphical
analysis of these teams’ success rates highlights tactical trends, such as the growing influence of pressing systems, positional play, and fluid attacking formations like the 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. The study also considers defensive adaptations, such as the growing appearance of three-at-the-back formations and counter-attacking strategies, reflecting the tactical balance between proactive and reactive approaches. Findings suggest that although possession-based and high-pressing systems became more prevalent, pragmatic tactical flexibility played a crucial role in sustained dominance. By examining these developments, this research provides insights into how tactical evolution shaped modern football, influencing coaching methodologies and future strategic trends.
