Os instrumentos musicais e a música do al-Andalus português

A investigação no campo da música e seus instrumentos na Idade Média tem-se baseado em fontes escritas e iconográficas, originárias da escultura ou de representações em manuscritos de índole diversa. Fontes essas, que só nos surgem com suficiente integridade a partir dos séculos XIII-XIV. Porém, a arqueologia tem vindo progressivamente a proporcionar-nos mais dados, maior quantidade e rigor das fontes. Ainda assim, os instrumentos musicais recuperados nestes contextos só pontualmente tem sido identificados e estudados de forma aprofundada. Efectivamente , no que concerne aos períodos até ao século XIII, só desde as últimas três décadas se tem vindo a articular pontual e paulatinamente a arqueologia com a etnomusicologia, nomeadamente quanto ao período islâmico em Portugal. Nesta sequência e sob a interdisciplinaridade associada à arqueomusicologia, revela-se pertinente colocar questões e abrir novos rumos. Que vestígios arqueológicos de instrumentos musicais em contexto do al-Andalus português foram efectivamente recuperados e quais os seus contextos arqueológicos de origem? Qual a sua organologia, agentes, práticas, funções e contextos coetâneos correlacionados? Qual a influência destes instrumentos e respectivas práticas associadas na produção de património intangível e memória colectiva na contemporaneidade? De modo a colmatar estas lacunas e responder a estas questões, o presente projecto tem como objecto de estudo os instrumentos musicais exumados em contexto do al-Andalus português. Através da arqueomusicologia, auguramos novos rumos além do estudo e interpretação do instrumento musical per se. Pretende-se não só o seu estudo, como a sua articulação com a iconografia, a historiografia, tratados e outras fontes coetâneas. Deste modo, sob a delimitação cronoespacial proposta e almejando uma mais aprofundada apreensão da mundividência do homem medieval, este projecto pretende produzir novo conhecimento aprofundado sobre a música, suas práticas, instrumentário, funções e contextos. Research in the field of music and its instruments in the Middle Ages has been based on written and iconographic sources originating from sculpture or representations in various manuscripts. These sources, however, only emerge with sufficient integrity from the 13th-14th centuries. Although, archaeology has progressively been providing us with more data, greater quantity, and rigor in sources. Nevertheless, the musical instruments recovered in these contexts have only occasionally been identified and thoroughly studied. Indeed, concerning the periods up to the 13th century, it has only been in the last three decades that archaeology has been punctually and gradually articulated with ethnomusicology, particularly regarding the Islamic period in Portugal. In this sequence, and under the interdisciplinary approach associated with archaeomusicology, it becomes relevant to raise questions and explore new directions. What archaeological vestiges of musical instruments in the context of Portuguese alAndalus have actually been recovered, and what are their archaeological origins? What is their organology, agents, practices, functions, and correlated contemporary contexts? What is the influence of these instruments and their associated practices on the production of intangible heritage and collective memory in contemporary times? In order to fill these gaps and answer these questions, the present project focuses on the musical instruments unearthed in the context of Portuguese al-Andalus. Through archaeomusicology, we aim for new directions beyond the study and interpretation of the musical instrument per se. Not only is its study intended, but also its articulation with iconography, historiography, treatises, and other contemporaneous sources. Thus, within the proposed chrono-spatial delimitation and aspiring to a more profound understanding of the medieval man's worldview, this project aims to generate new in-depth knowledge about music, its practices, instruments, functions, and contexts.
