This project report is part of the theme of Hospital architecture, its role in the health and well-being of users, as well as in their recovery. One of the purposes of this work was to present the state of knowledge of hospital buildings, presenting some examples of health buildings characteristic of various eras with different architectural modes and presenting the constructive typologies and materials used in their construction. Regarding natural lighting, emphasis is placed on making the best use of the glazed surroundings on the facades, skylights or through interior patios, which are the hallmark of a sober and functional space, with special attention given to compartments with long-term users. They are designed as constructive solutions, combined with solar protection, avoiding prob- lems of overheating, glare or excess direct solar radiation, including UV radiation. This work refers to studies on the effects of lighting on users, as well as on health pro- fessionals, especially in night shifts. A punctual survey of lighting in some typical compartments at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, in Loures, is presented, referring to the recommendations and technical specifications for Hos- pital buildings of the Central Administration of the Health System, IP (ACSS, IP) and national legislation. Conclusions are drawn of the importance of natural lighting in compartments for with long-term users, and the choice of artificial lighting systems considering energy efficiency and the carbon footprint, benefits of replacing less efficient solutions with more efficient ones.
