O Teatro das Laranjeiras foi o mais relevante dos teatros particulares em Portugal do século XIX e merece destaque pelas múltiplas razões que este volume expõe e explica. Do mesmo modo, também os Jardins das Laranjeiras se evidenciam e singularizam no panorama português. Ambos fizeram parte – assim como fora o Palácio –, de um processo de afirmação de poder ou, como diríamos hoje, instrumentos de uma construção de “capital cultural”, espoletada por um expoente da elite da sociedade oitocentista. A verdade é que mudaram física e simbolicamente uma parte da vida, da forma e da cultura da cidade de Lisboa, tornando-se, se não representativos, pelo menos simbólicos de uma época. Mais ainda, ao fazê-lo moldaram o futuro daquele lugar. É por essa razão que também este volume se estende tanto no território como no tempo, vindo até às transformações da cidade no século XX e suas consequências no presente. The Teatro das Laranjeiras was the most important of the private theatres in Portugal in the nineteenth century and deserves to be highlighted for the multiple reasons that this volume exposes and explains. In the same way, the Orange Tree Gardens also stand out and stand out in the Portuguese panorama. Both were part – as had been the Palace – of a process of assertion of power or, as we would say today, instruments of a construction of "cultural capital", triggered by an exponent of the elite of nineteenth-century society. The truth is that they have physically and symbolically changed a part of the life, form and culture of the city of Lisbon, becoming, if not representative, at least symbolic of an era. More so, in doing so, they shaped the future of that place. It is for this reason that this volume also extends both in territory and in time, going back to the transformations of the city in the twentieth century and their consequences in the present.
