Da Art Déco à evangelização
Publication .
João Pedro Vale e Nuno Alexandre Ferreira
Publication .
Focusing on the exhibition that João Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira presented in 2018 at Cristina Guerra Galery (Lisbon), this article addresses the strategies of discursive repression of homosexual identity during the Portuguese Estado Novo period. Analyzing the works exhibited and their critical reception, we used Foucault's conceptualization of the panopticon and archaeological strategy as a marginal archive (queer). Given the official suppression of the English word "homosexual", Vale and Ferreira respond with the word cruizing, so that we can classify a set of prohibited practices that, in Portuguese, not long ago could not have an appropriate name.
Sarah Affonso
Publication . Roquetti, Dunia; Instituto de História da Arte (IHA); Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina
A pioneer of the Portuguese Modernist movement, Sarah Affonso (1899-1983) encountered powerful concrete and unconscious obstacles along the path that defined her fate as a Woman and as an artist. The wife of the avant-garde artist, Almada Negreiros (1893-1970), hers was a story of enduring an eclipsed identity, her husband had the spotlight, and instead she transmuted her artistic career to the task of managing family life. Through the consciousness of the artist herself, we will present to the Brazilian reader the history of a woman who unfurled the banner of freedom in an extraordinary manner, but who was soon to be deprived of it to a certain degree. We will also contextualise her place in the history of Portuguese Modern Art, referencing the figures of speech and terminology used by contemporary critics to define her work, employing a series of stereotypes that are more closely associated with her gender than with her painting.
Imersão e Experiências de Receção Expandidas
Publication . Flores, Victor; Martins, Susana S.; Instituto de História da Arte (IHA); AIM – Associação de Investigadores da Imagem em Movimento
The special section “Immersion and expanded spectatorships” discusses how moving images have been intensely reinvented in recent virtual environments, promoting renewed forms of viewing that change and broaden the spectator’s experience. Engaging with the fact that the history of immersive media is often difficult to reconstruct and categorize clearly, the four essays here gathered reflect precisely such plurality of research lines. Simultaneously, they further demonstrate how this field has for long been shaped — and continues to be so — in a hybrid manner, through fruitful dialogues and mutual contamination.
Entre o poder espiritual e o poder secular
Publication .
Religious Festivals was one of the most visible forms of rule in the Early Modern Age, where spiritual and cultural power could be displayed hand to hand. Jubilees for the beatification and canonization were, among the vast array of Church ceremonial, particularly good occasions to showcase such display of power; as exemplified in the festivities for the beatification of Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) promoted by the Jesuits in the Azorean islands of Terceira and São Miguel. Besides Art History, our analysis also focuses on the engagement of the various participants, ranging from the Jesuits themselves to the authorities, namely the governor, the captain-major, the sergeants, and other local officials. Lastly, our research studies the diversity of participants and their impact in the festivities, whose mobilization and participation were, at the time, a greater good.
